National Digital Literacy Mission: Telangana school gets a digital library

Having launched a digital library in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh earlier this month, another one has been introduced in the Mandal Parishad Primary School, 8th Battalion, Rangareddy district of Telangana. The school also witnessed the opening of a National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) Centre.

The facilities were inaugurated by the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, E.S.L Narasimha and were introduced by the Cyient Foundation. The core aim of the library is to provide high-quality digital educational resources to more than 300 underprivileged students of the school, and accelerate digital literacy.

The key resources provided by the digital library, which is similar to the one in Nellore, include: online supplemental learning portal for students, teachers and schools from Class 1 to Class 5, CDs and DVDs to access offline content, learning resources for various subjects in multiple formats (animations, video lectures, presentations, class notes, worksheets, mind maps) and a repository of resources (question banks, lesson plans, projects, activities, mapped content, professional development and more) for teachers.

The Centre is expected to train 1,000 community members- one from each family- from 8th Battalion and the surrounding areas to operate a computer or a digital access device (such as a tablet), and use the Internet to search for information, send/receive emails and access various e-governance services.

The Governor was quoted as saying: “The biggest benefit of the National Digital Literacy Mission is that it will make people aware of their rights. The facility will help the people in knowing what their rights and responsibilities are, what the government owes to them and what they owe to the country. Men and women today must be computer friendly, only then the governments will be accountable.

Creating history: President Pranab Mukherjee to be a teacher for one day

Following the footsteps of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is going to interact with school children on September 4, the students of Class 11 and Class 12 will also be receiving lectures from none other than our President Pranab Mukherjee. The President will be holding a joint class for students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Sarvodhya Vidhalaya located in the Presidential Estate.

The students will assemble on the ‘Knowledge floor’ and listen to their new teacher. The President is also expected to teach and impart knowledge to 100 teachers, as well. This idea was given by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia; the President liked the idea and gave his consent for the same. He gave a nod as he is a firm believer of the fact that a teacher is like a potter, who, with his soft and skillful hands, moulds the destiny of the student.

Pranab Mukherjee, on the eve of Independence Day, emphasised on providing quality education and encouraged the concept of “guru-shishya” (Teacher-Student) relation. “What has happened to quality (education), from base to apex? We recall the guru-shishya parampara with legitimate pride; why then have we abandoned the care, devotion and commitment that is at the heart of this relationship?” he had asked.

This will be the first time in the Indian history that any President will wear the cap of a teacher. On earlier occasions, however, Mukherjee and his predecessor A P J Abdul Kalam met and interacted with students on various occasions.

34 students fall ill after eating mid-day meal

On August 24, 34 girl students of a government school in Jahangirpuri area were taken ill after consuming a mid-day meal.

The students of A-Block Girls School complained of stomach pain after eating the daal-rice which was served as the mid-day meal, following which they were rushed to nearby Babu Jagjiwan Ram Hospital.

Dr. Amareshwar Narayan, Medical Superintendent Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, said that, “We got a call from the school and were informed that more than 30 students are complaining of stomach pain after eating the mid day meal. We immediately admitted all the girls and started the treatment. It was a case of food poisoning.”

Except two students, rest of them were discharged after preliminary treatment. Police said they received a call at the PCR about the incident and an FIR has been registered in this connection.

A senior police official said, “An FIR has been registered under IPC sections 284 (negligent conduct with respect to poisonous substance) and 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others) against unidentified persons. Further investigation is underway.” The Education Department authorities, however, said the samples of the meal served today have been sent for testing.

“The same meal was served to over 400 students of the school. However, since these students complained of stomach ache after consuming it, we have sent the samples for testing,” Padmini Singhla, Director of Education said.

Recently, a RTI query had revealed that the quality testing of the food served under the midday meal programme in Delhi Government schools is on hold since four months due to non-empanelment of testing labs.
