That HTC Smartwatch? It’s a designer’s flight of fancy

htc-smartwatch1

The eagle-eyed were ecstatic: HTC had shared a video of its design studios and there, lurking in plain (if pixely) sight, seemed to be the much-rumored HTC smartwatch, right there on a designer’s desk. It was enough to reignite speculation about an HTC-made Android Wear wearable, but now HTC has waded in with some cold water, claiming the whole thing is just a designer’s tinkering.

According to an HTC spokesperson, the prototype is indeed a smartwatch, but it’s not specifically what HTC plans to actually make. Instead, it’s a design exercise by one of the team, rather than an early product.

“HTC encourages our design team to explore and tinker with new ideas and even models, as is the case with the watch some viewers noticed in our recent HTC Design video. It in no way indicates an actual product HTC is planning to release. Keep an eye on this space for exciting new products from HTC when they are ready to be announced!” HTC

The video, which you can see below, showed both a CAD model and a physical prototype of the smartwatch. With a square screen, it seemed HTC’s designer had a similar idea to LG and Samsung – which both have Android Wear watches on sale already – rather than following Motorola’s path with the circular MOTO 360.

HTC has already said it plans to join the Android Wear party, but there’s no timescale for that to actually happen. Back in May, leaks suggested HTC was looking at round not square displays, and though it’s unclear if that will actually be the case it might be a sensible strategy for the firm.

HTC One (W8) Windows Phone handset rumored for August 21 launch

htc-one-m8-photos-8

HTC is working on a flagship Windows Phone 8.1 handset based on HTC One (M8), according to several reports. Earlier this month @evleaks said the HTC’s W8 Windows Phone handset would feature BoomSound and Duo cameras, similar to the HTC One (M8). According the Engadget’s sources, the device is expected to be called “One (M8) for Windows”. It also says that it would feature voice over LTE, but it is likely to be enabled by Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update.

As reported earlier this week, the WP 8.1 update 1 would also bring support for smart covers like the HTC Dot View case in the Windows Phone. It would come in silver color, but is not clear if the smartphone would feature similar design and specifications as the One (M8).

According to Engadget, the upcoming HTC W8 Windows Phone 8 handset expected to launch on Verizon during this third quarter of 2014, but WPCentral says that it would be unveiled on August 20th and launch on the 21st. It also says that it would be priced at US$610 off-contract and would cost about US$199 on contract.

What do you think? Will you buy a Windows Phone 8 handset with HTC One M8 specifications ?

HTC Volantis Nexus 9 “Flounder” leaks yet again

nexus-9-536x399

Having seen no reference of a new Nexus tablet mentioned at Google I/O, hope was deflated that the various leaks we’d seen about the Nexus 9, or even the Nexus 6 and Nexus 8, were false claims.

However, it seems the codename of what is believed to be the Nexus 9 is still cropping up. Courtesy of @evleaks, a document has been leaked showing off the codename “Flounder”. Unfortunately, much of the screenshot is blurred out, presumably hiding information which is too revealing about the Nexus 9.

Previous leaks have indicated that the Nexus 9 will feature a 8.9-inch display running a 2048 x 1440 (281ppi) resolution, powered by a Tegra K1 64-bit processor with 2GB of RAM.

Although the leaked screenshot doesn’t give much away, it could be summarised that so much information being blocked out means some pretty juicy details under there, indicating that the Nexus 9 and Flounder does exist; the question is more a matter of when than if.

Black HTC One M8, yellow Nexus 5 on the horizon

nexus5_yellow-631x485

OK, call me boring but I like my smartphones to look understated and elegant. So when it comes to choosing what color I want my hardware to be I will always go for the black option. Lately we are seeing many manufacturers turning towards bold or fancy colour schemes for their devices.

@evleaks has uncovered a pic of what could be a black HTC One M8 lurking out there. The photo shows the back of the One M8 with what looks like a metallic black finish which really works well with the silver HTC logo.

Following on from the release of a very Red Nexus 5 handset, Google may have let slip that their flagship Nexus phone could be making an appearance in yellow soon. Google already has a yellow bumper case so this could be the same color yellow that we see the Nexus 5 sporting, as we saw with the red Nexus.

Could a yellow Nexus 5 be related to the possible name of “Lemon Cake” for the next version of Android or am I just thinking too much into this?

What are your thoughts on the rumored colors for these two phones ? Let know us know in the comments below.

Earlier in the year, at the MWC 2014, HTC announced the Desire 816 as the higher mid-range phablet and it was launched in India in April for Rs. 23,990. The Desire 816 comes with a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP front facing “selfie” camera. The internals are on the same lines as the budget Moto G, but HTC hopes to sell the Desire 816 with a larger screen, a much better camera combination and their HTC Sense UI.

Before we move on to the camera samples, you can check out the specifications of the HTC Desire 816 right below.

  • 5.5-inch (1280 x 720 pixels) display
  • 1.6 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • Android with HTC Sense 5.5
  • Dual SIM (optional)
  • 13MP rear camera with LED Flash, f/2.2, 1080p HD recording

HTC One (M8) Ace rumored as Vogue Edition, expected June 3

DSC01485-631x354

HTC One (M8) is most certainly one of the best smartphones out at the moment. HTC’s flagship has been around for some time now and we’ve already seen some leaks regarding some spin-offs, if we can say it that way, of that device. HTC One Remix for Verizon has leaked as well as HTC One (M8) prime and HTC has already launched HTC One mini 2 recently.

This time around we have a leak regarding HTC One M8 Vogue coming from China. This device might as well be HTC M8 “Ace” which has leaked over a month ago. The specifications of the device are allegedly going to be the same as in HTC One (M8), but the design will be significantly different and it will sport only 1 camera on the back, like HTC Desire 816 for example, which has one 13MP camera and a plastic design materials. We don’t exactly have a clear picture of how the phone will look like because we don’t have an image to attach to this leak, but we’re guessing something similar to HTC One (M8) covered in plastic instead of aluminum.

The device should be released on June 3rd, at least in China, and the price should be somewhere around $480. It is also rumored that it will be available in black, white, blue and red colors. What do you think about all this? Would you buy a phone like this?
