LG G6's FullVision Display and UX 6.0 Previewed

LG on Thursday released yet another teaser that showcases the all-new UX 6.0 for the first time. We already know that the LG G6 will sport a 5.7-inch QHD+ (1440×2880 pixels) display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. The company has now confirmed that the LG G6 will come with what the company calls FullVision display, which will take advantage of the entire screen. The UX is said to be designed in a way that fills the front of the smartphone.

Both the top and bottom part of the screen will offer more information when surfing the Web, reading e-books, and when watching videos or playing games. LG G6 will come with a feature that will allow users to view existing 16:9 ratio content in 18:9 format.

LG UX 6.0 will come with a Square Camera feature which will divide the 18:9 display into two identical perfect squares that will allow users to shoot image as well as review them in the adjacent window. Sony Starts Rolling Out February Android Security Update Ahead of Google Pixel Phones

Sony has earned itself some bragging rights as the Japan-based company has started rolling out the February Android security update to its Xperia devices, even ahead of Google’s own Pixel smartphones. Google makes its security patch available to the OEMs every month with bug fixes and security improvements to the Android build but this time around Sony has definitely surprised the industry with its speed of rolling out the update.

Sony Starts Rolling Out February Android Security Update Ahead of Google Pixel Phones

The Japanese consumer electronics giant has started rolling out the firmware update, with build number 39.2.A.0.417, for the Xperia XZ and X Performance, which includes Google’s February Android security update, Xperia Blog said in its report. Additionally, Xperia X and X Compact have received the February patch as well with their latest update (build 34.2.A.0.311).

Usually it’s the Nexus or Pixel smartphones that get the update first due the backing provided by Google but this time around, Sony has made a strong statement by rolling out its update this early in the month.

Considering that there have been several vulnerabilities associated with Android that have been exposed by security firms and researchers in last few months, this can be seen as a welcome change from the company. Notably, the search giant earlier fixed the “Dirty COW” vulnerability with its December Android security update.

Google has previously encouraged OEMs to push out the security updates in a timely manner in order to keep the devices secure and updated.

OnePlus 2 Users Start Receiving Fix for Network Drop Issue With OxygenOS 3.5.6 Update

Last week, OnePlus rolled out the OxygenOS 3.5.5 update based on Marshmallow last week to all OnePlus 2 users, but pulled it back after many users started complaining of network issues. Users said that their network was dropping continually, and claimed that installing the update introduced the issue. OnePlus has now apparently fixed the issue, and has begun rolling the patch out with OxygenOS 3.5.6 update to all OnePlus 2 users.

OnePlus 2 Users Start Receiving Fix for Network Drop Issue With OxygenOS 3.5.6 UpdateOnePlus 2 users are now receiving the OxygenOS 3.5.6 update over-the-air (OTA). The company has said that it is an “incremental rollout”, hence users will receive the update in phases over the next few days. This update claims to fix the ‘persistent network drops’ that users complained about.

Major chunk of complaints were from owners on Airtel or Reliance Jio networks in India. The issue only cropped up once the owner started using mobile data, but on Wi-Fi the device performed normally. We recommend that you update your device through a strong Wi-Fi connection and have sufficient battery on your smartphone.
The company has also started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T users worldwide. The Android 7.0 Nougat-based OxygenOS 4.0 update is being pushed out over-the-air and will reach all users over the coming days. The company is again calling it an “incremental rollout”, implying that it will roll out in batches, and only a few users will receive it on the first day, while others should receive it over the course of the next few days. Alongside, OnePlus has also announced the release of Open Beta 1 for OnePlus 3T users.

Gionee Says Firm on Manufacturing Plans Post Demonetisation

Handset maker Gionee today said it is firm on its plans manufacturing mobile phones in India despite disruptions due to demonetisation.

Gionee Says Firm on Manufacturing Plans Post Demonetisation“Yes of course, we are committed to Make in India and planning to set up a manufacturing unit spread across 50 acres in Faridabad at a cost of Rs. 500 crores,” Gionee India CEO and Country Head Arvind Vohra told PTI when asked about plans of manufacturing handsets in India post demonetisation.

“The capacity of the unit will be 30 million units and it should be operational in about two years,” he said.

“With demonetisation, the market had undoubtedly slowed down, but is getting back on track with the cash crunch situation easing. Sales declined 20 percent in the first two to three days, but with partial recovery now the decline is 8-10 percent,” he said.

In long-term, Gionee plans not to only tap the growing demand in India as well as act as an export hub to serve markets like Africa and South East Asia, the company said.
At present, about 60 percent of Gionee’s devices sold in India are manufactured locally at facilities run by Foxconn (Tamil Nadu) and Dixon (Noida) of Dixon Technologies.
To tackle the after-effects of demonetisation, Gionee believed distributors were needed to increase the credit cycle to retailers and both retailers and brands were required to give more lucrative offers to the cash-hit consumers.

Speaking about 4G handset shipping scenario, Vohra said “we are seeing a quick change in the growth of 4G handsets shipment since 2016, and it will be an upward trend in coming years too.”

Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus Purported Specifications, Release Date, Images Leaked

Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus Purported Specifications, Release Date, Images LeakedThere has so far been very little information regarding Motorola’s followup to the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus smartphones. However, some alleged images of what could be the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus have surfaced on the Internet.

The images and specifications of the fifth generation Moto G devices were leaked online in the form of a screenshot posted by The Android Soul. The images show the front of the devices and are not clear enough to make out any notable difference from their fourth-gen counterparts. If the images are true, it seems like the Moto G5 Plus will keep the fingerprint sensor on the front while the Moto G5 will not get the sensor.

On the specifications front, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus seem to be identical, except the former will sport a 13-megapixel rear camera while the latter will get a 16-megapixel camera. With a 5.5-inch full-HD display, 5-megapixel front camera, and an octa-core processor for both the devices, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus sound incredibly similar to their predecessors. As always, until there’s an official confirmation, you should take all this with a pinch of salt.

Furthermore, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Pus will be offered with a 16GB storage, but only the Moto G5 Plus will get a 32GB variant as well. The screenshot also suggests Turbo Charging feature for both the devices.

As for the operating system, the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are expected to launch with Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box. The Android 7.0 Nougat began rolling out for the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus in October. Meanwhile, the Android 7.1.1 has also begun rolling out to a few Android One users and is expected to roll out for Nexus and Pixel owners in the coming days.

Coming back to the Moto G5 and Moto G5 plus, the images and specs are among the first leaks on the devices that have appeared on the Internet, so it’s best to wait for additional confirmation before getting too excited. Lastly, the leak also suggests a March 8 release for the devices, and though the market for the devices is yet to be revealed, you can expect India to be on that list.
